The computer then uses this information to identify the router on the first hop and then sends another packet with a TTL value of 2. The first router will receive the packet decrement the value to zero and then send a ‘Time exceeded’ error message back to the source computer.
So for instance, if there are 5 hops between the source and the destination host, the first packet with a TTL value of 1 is sent.
